James remembered that on 'That Mitchell and Webb Look' they use something called a SnorriCam in one of sketches. He thought it would look cool in our video so we investigated further. Mick Jagger's song 'God Gave Me Everything I Want' uses this as the concept in its video and maybe we can incorporate there ideas into ours. Here is the video.
The differcult bit is going to build the SnorriCam which is attached to the body of the thing its following. Therefore will are going to be doing some test shots to see if it is actually possible to do at our budget.

Audience Research
This question is to help us with some of the decisions we are facing in the production stage of our music video. Please leave a comment underneath telling us your answer.
Should a rock video contain the conventions and themes of the genre or do you think it is acceptable to only use certain aspects?

Possible DVD/CD Cover
We tried a few different camera positions to start with and changed the lighting to best suit the picture until we found one we liked near the end and when took several pictures so that we could decide later if they are any good and which one looks best, also thanks to Dan Beetham who educated us in how the work the lights.
Here are some of our early shots;
As you can see we decided with a guitar and amp with graphitti light coming off it which gives a good effect however choosing one will be hard so any suggestions on which one you like most will be appreciated.
We think that 'Fortune Faded' in the bottom left hand corner of these later pictures would be the best place to put it and also the effect of the graphitti light with correspond with our website for the band.

Light Graphitti Testing
Today we did our own light graphitti to see how it works, how effective and easily it can be done and also how far we could take it at a beginner level.
We started firstly in a dark room which was pitch black, therefore the only thing you could see was the light and no background.
Once we found out how to do it we did some designs that we might actually do for our dvd cover and website, still in the pitch black.
We were thinking of having multi-colours such as red, orange and white that would be in the shape of musical notes and soundwaves which would be coming off an electrical guitar. To do this though we needed to try and test light graphitti in dark room but not in pitch black so therefore the background and pictures would still be there eg the guitar.
The only problem with this is if you stay in one place for too long while moving the light around, you become part of the picture however in a ghost effect. Therefore we need to move around alot in the real photos to not be as clear or in the photos. However these pictures have shwon that we can do it in a darkened room and it is quite effective.

We have settled on Fortune Faded as our song by Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Because we have to produce a music video and two other auxiliary tasks we are currently debating what these should be. One idea we have is to do a poster advertising the band. One of the key concepts for the poster is to produce light graffiti and use it for the poster and website. The reasoning behind this is they use a form of light graffiti in their music video produced by Rick Rubin, (see below for video.) The form used in the music video is produced by CGI but our version will be used by slowing the shutter speed on the camera and taking a photograph. This will create a link between the actually music video and our work.
These are some examples of light graffiti from the Internet
The one above is the type of thing we will be able to do whereas the one below is a link to pictures from the mail online, showing what professionals can produce.

We were unable to find the direct email address for Warner Brothers Music Group, however on their website they had a contact page were you put in your request and submit it. We also sent an email to EMI (Electric Music Industry) and in theory they should reply. This is what we sent them.
Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to request your permission to use the song Fortune Faded by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers . I am part of a three person team who are currently studying media studies at Thurston Community College in Suffolk. We are requesting to use the song for educational purposes only, in the form of our A level music video project.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to reading your reply

Ideas for Video
Firstly, we have e-mailed Warner Music Group UK & USA and EMI who are Red Hot Chilli Peppers record labels to ask if we can use the song Fortune Faded to do a music video about for education purposes.
Secondly as the song isn't really about anything in specific we can pretty much do any narrative to it. Our ideas are using the main lyric of fortune faded in some way for example coming from having lots of money to nothing. Or using it other ways such as a fortune tellerand crystal ball. We still intend to colaborate slow motion and reverse techniques somewhere.

These web addresses are the official and unofficial band websites. Rehotchillipeppers.com theme is base around their latest album Stadium Arcadium whereas the unofficial website stadium-arcadium.com theme is based around the colour and RHCP symbol of the star.
We can use these in our website design where we can link the CD/DVD cover to the website.

As one of our auxilery tasks we are going to produce a band website. Above are some fansites we have looked at when deciding on how to go about it. We have learned that the aesthetic of the website is heavily influenced by the genre and type of music which the band produces. So when we were analysing Taylor Swifts fan site we noticed considerable differences compared to Slipknots. There seemed to be an increased emphsis onb Taylor herself with large photos of her face in a soft focus this creates a certain feeling around her and also reflects on the type of music that she produces. There is also obdviouse differences in the uses of color. Taylors page had a soft light color whilst Slipknot and Enter Shikari had used much darker and duller coloring this also is a reflection on the types of music which these different bands produce. Will will be using this information to strongly influence our own decisions when producing our own web page as we know to taylor the aesthetic to suit the type of music we will be presenting.

Performance based research
This this why we have decided against doing a performanced based video.
This video shows that it is hard to produce a good performance based video. This performance video lacks energy and rapid edits that a lot of conventional rock performance video. There is jump cuts between him smashing his guitar half way through the act which is unconventional, also the drummer stops to watch him after that it cuts back to the guitar in the same place and the amp that he hit with the guitar is in the same place. If once wasn't bad enough the lead singer then kicks over an amp and then its back in its original place in the next shot and you can see that the amps aren't plugged in. All in all this is a disastrous performance music video and further illustrates the point of not doing a performance music video ourselves.

Ideas
We are currently thinking of a concept/narrative based video rather than performance because in our research on previous advanced media production music videos the quality of performance based videos have been on the majority worst appearing than concept/narrative based. We intend to use slow motion and reverse techniques in our video but are still undecided on what track to use although we have narrowed it down.

Director Profile - Jonathan Glazer
This further reiterates the point made further down the page of Jonathan Glazers' style and the returning motifs in most of his work.
As you can see the recurring motifs of the black and white, the use of slow motion, the male torso, and the sense of victory are all present in this advert. Add to this the very high production values, and it's clear that Jonathan Glazer has a very distinct style, which he has brought over form adverts to music video to feature length films.
Because of this very stylised way of making videos, we have chosen to incorporate some of these techniques in our music video.

Director profile - Jonathan Glazer
This British director started in advertising and produced great adverts such as Guiness' White Horses and Stella Artois' skating priests. He then moved on to music videos and directed videos such as 'UNKLE - Rabbit in Your Headlights'. He has now further moved on to directing films and directed 'Sexy Beast'.
Jonathan Glazers style is unique. He uses black and white and to create high constrast and has recurring motifs oh the naked male torso, horses, slow motion, cinematic style and powerful imagery.
Radiohead - Street Spirit was directed by Jonathan Glazer and uses techniques in the videos that we might use such as slow motion. Slow motion has the effect of having an dramatic shot for longer.
